One full year following the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the Russian resort of Sochi continues to be a place for world-class sporting activities, as a result of the legacy offered by the Olympic venues.

The 2014 Winter Games’ organisers developed a group of high class sports venues for the Games, which now supply the 2014 host region with the capability to stage leading international championships in virtually all Olympic winter sports.

The Bolshoy Ice Dome, for example, is already residence to Sochi’s very first professional ice hockey team, it consistently draws in between 7,000 and 8,000 fans for Kontinental Hockey League matches. It has also already hosted the 2015 KHL All-star match this year.

The Olympic Park itself, however, enjoyed hosting the inaugural Formula One Russian Grand Prix in October 2014, offering a distinctive spectacle, as eventual world champion, Lewis Hamilton, was victorious in front of Mercedes team mate, Nico Rosberg. “The track, being around the Olympic Park, is rather an extraordinary place," declared Britain’s Hamilton after the race.

Elsewhere in the Olympic Park, the Fisht Olympic Stadium – which hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies during Sochi 2014 – is presently being developed and modified into a soccer stadium, which is scheduled to be finished before the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, along with the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The Ice Cube Curling Centre will additionally be home to elite-level sports once again, when it hosts the 2015 WCF World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships, as well as the 2015 World Senior Curling Championships, whilst the Shayba Arena is going to be transformed from its Games-time layout to develop into the Russian Children’s Sports and Education Centre.

Locations in Sochi’s Mountain Cluster will also present a very important sporting legacy for the region. The Rosa Khutor Alpine Centre, Rosa Khutor Extreme Park, and Laura Cross-Country Ski and Biathlon Centre, are now winter sports resort destinations, in addition to venues for elite-level competitors as well as training. Rosa Khutor is going to host the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in 2016, whilst the Sanki Sliding Centre is scheduled to host the 2015 FIL European Luge Championships, a 2015 FIL Luge World Cup event, along with a 2015 FIBT World Cup, and the FIBT Bob & Skeleton World Championships in 2017.

Considering the variety of thrilling events on the horizon, Sochi appears set to turn into a fixture on the international sporting calendar for many years to come.
