The German E-Bike Market records impressive growth

As expected, every business that aims to add value to the lives of its customers will experience growth. This is the case of the German E-Bike which has witnessed an increase in sales. The records for 2017 from the industry association ‘Zweirad Industrie Verband’ (ZIV) indicates that the German E-Bikes are now the preferred means of transportation and, sports and leisure due to certain features of the bikes which make them less noisy, easy to maintain and the owners don’t require large storage spaces for their German E-Bikes.

Over 720,000 E-Bikes were sold in Germany in 2017; this was an impressive sale record which indicated an appreciation by 19% from the previous years. It is current currently among the top five bike brands selling fast in Germany.

Market share

The E-Bike sales figures for the year 2017 indicate a 19% appreciation. The company ZIV has announced that this figure is I expected to increase in the coming years based on its growth plans. ZIV projects its future sales to reach about one million units which represent a 23-25% appreciation and eventually a rise to 35% of the market share (or sale of 1,350,000 E-bikes) in accordance with its long-term growth plans.

E-bike categories

From the statistics, the preferred model of E-Bikes which has been the target markets favourite is the 250W/25 km/h model which has made up 99% of the total sales. The speed pedelecs make up about 1% of the sales; these are the 45km/h models which require a type approval, a mandatory helmet and the relevant insurance before purchase. An analysis of the high demand for the 250W/25km/h E-Bikes indicates that the e-City bikes make up about 38.5% of the total sales; e-Trekking makes up 35.5%, e MTBs at 21.5% and the e-Cargo bikes at 3%.

ZIV has also pointed out the high demand for the ‘Made in Germany’ e-bikes. The records indicate that a total of 291,000 e-bikes were exported to other countries in 2017; which marks an appreciation when compared to the 25% export records for 2016.

The Bicycle Market in 2017

 In Germany, the sales reports from ZIV indicate that a total of 3.85 million units were sold in 2017. This record marks a 5% up from the total units sold in 2016. Over 2.69 billion Euros was realised from the sales; an increase of 3.2% when compared to 2016. With the inclusion of the P&A sales, the estimated turnover achieved in Germany by ZIV was reported to be 5.4 billion Euros. Averagely, the bike units (including e-bikes) were sold at 698 Euros, which was 8.6% higher than the cost in 2016.
