Golf in Czech Republic Finds Renewed Popularity

2014-07-06 source own
The D+D Real Czech Masters will bring the European Tour back to the Czech Republic this August. It will be the first time since 1997 that the European Tour has come to the country. Many golfers are hoping that this world class event will attract a younger generations and create a new interest in the sport.

Unlike traditional Scottish courses, most Czech golf courses have a parkland design. This is due primarily to the land locked nature of the country, being surrounded by Germany, Poland, Austria and Slovakia. The Czech courses are kept lush and green and are generally lined with trees. Albatross Golf Resort near Prague will be hosting the Czech Masters. The course features 18-holes and a practice facility that is world class. Having opened in 2009, the Albatross is known for its wonderful hospitality and an excellent and challenging golf experience.

The citizens of the Czech Republic are not new to the sport of golf. The first course opened in 1904 in the town of Karlovy Vary, just west of Prague. The second course followed shortly after in 1905 in the resort town of Marianske Lazne. Since then, the country has played host to European and international PGA tournaments.

It wasn’t until 1989 that golf really found its popularity in central Europe. Since then, many new courses have been constructed, including many in the Czech Republic. Today, there are over 50 golf courses and 50,000 club members. There are development projects in the works for more high-end golf course to be built and owned by Czech and International companies.
