The French sports retail giant Decathlon is continuing its ambitious expansion in Central Europe, specifically in Germany’s Ruhr area. By spring 2025, Decathlon will open new stores in Recklinghausen and Bochum, bringing its total locations in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) to 20. This move is set to create approximately 50 new jobs in the region and further solidify Decathlon's position as a leading provider of sports products for beginners and experts alike.

New Location in Recklinghausen at Palais Vest

Decathlon will establish its presence in Palais Vest, a prominent shopping and leisure destination in Recklinghausen. The new store will occupy 1,000 square meters in the basement of the shopping center, offering a wide range of multi-sport products. Palais Vest, featuring around 100 stores across 45,600 square meters, aims to strengthen its role as a central retail and lifestyle hub for Recklinghausen and its neighboring communities.

Bochum Welcomes Decathlon to Westfield Ruhr Park

In Bochum, Decathlon will open a new branch at Westfield Ruhr Park, Germany’s largest open-air shopping center. Located just ten minutes from Bochum’s city center, the mall offers excellent connectivity via two motorways and eight local bus lines. Decathlon’s Bochum store will span over 1,000 square meters, providing an accessible location for customers to explore a diverse range of sporting goods.

Exact opening dates for both locations will be announced soon. Speaking on the expansion, Abdelaziz Rachidi, Head of Expansion at Decathlon Germany, shared: “Our new locations in Recklinghausen and Bochum demonstrate our commitment to promoting sports culture in the Ruhr area. We aim to make sports products accessible to everyone, from beginners to seasoned athletes.”

Decathlon’s Growing Network in Germany

With the opening of these two stores, Decathlon continues to expand its footprint in Germany, aligning with its goal to operate 150 locations nationwide by 2027. The company’s long-term vision ensures that every resident in Germany will be able to reach a Decathlon store within a 20-minute drive, further enhancing convenience and accessibility for sports enthusiasts.

Decathlon: A Trusted Business Partner for Sports in Central Europe

This expansion reinforces Decathlon’s reputation as an expert in business development in Central Europe and its dedication to serving as a trusted business partner for communities in the region. By investing in prominent locations like Recklinghausen’s Palais Vest and Bochum’s Westfield Ruhr Park, Decathlon continues to promote its mission of making sports accessible to all while supporting local economies and jobs.
