The Russian Rugby Federation recently made a bit to host the 2027 Rugby World Cup, a measure that has now received the personal stamp of approval from President Vladimir Putin.Though the official bidding process doesn’t start until February of 2021, the Federation has already established a committee to prepare both an application and presentation to World Cup leaders, who will make a decision sometime around May 2022.This move puts Russia in direct competition with Australia, a strong favorite to get the nomination. However, no other countries have yet thrown their hats into the ring for 2027.It is the Federation’s hope that Russia’s status as an up-and-coming supporter of the sport will give it a distinct advantage, particularly considering World Rugby’s strong dedication to furthering the popularity of the sport.
